Hello, Oppo, my old friend. I’ve come to survey you again.

Unfortunately work/life got in the way and there wasn’t a showdown yesterday. But we’re going to make up for that right... after a review of Firday’s showdown.

Kinja'd!!!

The battle between Journey and Rise Against for the better variant of Journey’s song “Any Way You Want It” was incredibly close, with the two never more than three votes apart and both leading at some point. Ultimately, after spending most of the weekend separated by a single vote, Journey managed to hold on, taking it by three. Our sympathies go out to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

The Sound of Silence is, quite literally, the song that saved Simon and Garfunkel. Simon spent months writing the song, and the duo used it for their audition for Columbia Records. Columbia signed the duo, and the song was featured on their 1964 debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3AM . Unfortunately the album was a flop, and the pair broke up, with Paul Simon returning to Europe and Art Garfunkel returning to Columbia University.

In the spring of 1965 the song started getting steadily increased airplay in Boston and Florida, and the growing popularity caused the song’s producer, Tom Wilson, to remix the song (without telling Simon or Garfunkel), dubbing in electronic instruments and percussion on top of the acoustic guitars the duo had used in the original recording. The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was released in September 1965, and by New Year’s it was #1 on the charts. The pair hastily reunited, going on to become one of the most prominent folk groups of the 60's.

Disturbed recently covered the classic hit, bringing to it a darker, more dire tone which sits in stark contrast to the folksy sound of the original, particularly when played back to back. But is it better?

Man i usually love the original versions, but disturbed killed it with their cover. The darkness and his voice are just too good to vote against IMO

I think the Lennon original is better. The other one sounds kinda out of key and far less appealing than that classic piano riff.

Makes me think of Frank the Tank.

Couple more suggestions:

Good Times Bad Times - Zeppelin/Godsmack

The drummer for Godsmack does a pretty faithful rendition of Bonham’s incredible drum work on this one.

Bad Company - Bad Company/Five Finger Death Punch

I voted S&G, but I’m pretty impressed with the Disturbed version. David Draiman sounds a little too “opera” at times, though.

Wow, I was just thinking to myself; “A Perfect Circle and Lennon with the song Imagine should be the next one to vote on.”

Myself, I actually prefer the darker tone of A Perfect Circle’s cover.

Más suggestions:

99 Red Balloons

Nena vs. Goldfinger (vs. 7 Seconds?)

I love them both, but APC for the win.

ps what about greenday and lennon’s working class hero?

Jeez, is Disturbed the Hoff’s new project? I’ve heard better covers of that song from buskers.

I’m going to have to go with the original here. I think cover versions can often be really good, even better than originals. But, this song was too good in the original form. It is hard to really improve on without sounding like you are trying too hard. Also, for me it isn’t the right kind of song for Disturbed to try to do anything with it. It isn’t really an angry kind of song.

I would be interested in hearing a Disturbed version where they do the whole song the way they did the first two verses. Dark, emotional, but without any of the angry shouty business

Dammit I’m torn. I want both.

Couldn’t have the Disturbed version without the legendary original.

The original holds up well.

I like Disturbed a good deal, and this is an extremely tasteful and modern take on the original.

I’m always skeptical of covers (Cake’s “I Will Survive” and Alien Ant Farm’s “Smooth Criminal” being two notable exceptions).

I’m voting Disturbed, but I’d rather give 2/3 of a vote to S&G and 1/3 to Disturbed. I’m now playing both as close to synced as I can.

Would agree. More restraint, especially from a band like Distrubd, would have gone a long way. Still good, but not amazing.

Thanks for doing these. I love good covers. For me the holy grail is good Pink Floyd covers. Hard to come by.

I heard Korn cover a Floyd song. I think it was comfortably numb, which is one of my favorite songs of all time. It was fucking terrible.

No one can outdo Zeppelin at any song.

I prefer Fiver Finger Death Punch’s version to Bad Company's.

Really the Foo Fighters are the world’s greatest cover band.

A local classic rock radio station (KSHE, kshe95.com) hosts a Pink Floyd tribute show every year with a band called El Monstero. They quickly sell out every year.

The Disturbed cover is good till he starts going all screamo. Gah. No thanks.
